This bit is similar to a regular Snaffle Bit except for the Eggbutt style rings. These rings have holes in the top and bottom, in which gag cheek pieces are inserted to lift the horse's head for additional control. The nutcracker action of the bit pinches the tongue and shoots out against the horse's mouth, increasing the severity of the mouthpiece.
